People traffickers 'flung 12 human sacrifices from Italy-bound boat in voodoo ritual to calm stormy seas'

By Nick Pisa

Five people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after more than a dozen illegal immigrants were thrown from a boat in a 'voodoo ritual to calm stormy seas,' an Italian prosecutor revealed today.
Survivors gave police an horrific account of how human 'sacrifices' were picked from a ship crammed with 400 people after the engine failed.

The captain, a Nigerian, allegedly picked the victims on ethnic origin or nationality.
Witnesses described a number of women performing a macabre 'magic dance' before the victims were flung overboard to 'calm the seas and placate the devil'.

The ship was sailing from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has been inundated with refugees fleeing the troubles in the Middle East
It was eventually escorted into harbour by coastguards after sending a mayday signal.
When the boat reached Lampedusa, 25 illegal immigrants were found dead in the hold.
They had suffocated due to the poisionous fumes from the engine and the cramped squalid conditions on board.
Dozens of others were rushed to hospital suffering from dehydration and exhaustion.

Police on the island carried out a three month investigation and have now held five West African men, aged between 28 and 44.
Prosecutor Ignazio Fonzo led the investigation and the suspects - who were granted leave to stay on humanitarian grounds - were held after a series of raids across southern Italy.
Mr Fonzo said: 'Survivors told us that the captain of the boat, a Nigerian, was the leader of the rituals that began after the engine on the boat failed and they were left stranded in stormy seas.

Material para o espectáculo I

Poesia: Refugees

Refugees

We challenge the sea
during our best years
facing routes
of millions of other destinies
Landing is a risk.
At Lampedusa's doors
other stories will surface
entangled in the fishermen's nets.
We'll leave emphasis to other exodus.
We are only refugees
protagonists of current events
and clandestines for History

«From February to April 2011, 23 thousand Tunisians reached the tiny island of Lampedusa, Italy
The Italian Government called this event  an invasion, a barbaric horde, a biblical exodus, a humanitarian tsunami. But nobody spoke about the stories of these young people.
From the refugee camps of Manduria, Mineo and Palazzo San Gervasio (Southern Italy), five of these young people tell us about the constriction of their whole life under the regime of Ben Ali and about the unexpexcted and groundbreaking revolution that made the President flee. Then the possibility to leave, -: for someone a long-lasting dream, for others just a sudden decision.
Those are the best years: the ones of a generation that lived without freedom for too long that now has decided to take it all.»

Notícia: Migrant Boat Rescued by Italian Navy – Migrants to be Transferred to Sicily | MIGRANTS AT SEA

«The Italian Navy vessel Foscari rescued 44 migrants last night from a disabled boat that is believed to have departed from Libya about 4 days ago. Maltese media reported that the Italians wanted to disembark the rescued migrants in Malta due to the earlier decision of Italian authorities to close Lampedusa for search and rescue purposes. However Adnkronos news is reporting that the Foscari is taking the rescued migrants to Augusta, Sicily.

The first satellite phone distress call from the migrant boat was reportedly made when the boat was located within the Libyan SAR. The migrant boat was finally sighted by an Italian fishing boat last night within the Maltese SAR. The Italian Navy vessel Foscari rescued the migrants. A Somali woman and her newborn infant who was born on the migrant boat were flown by helicopter to Lampedusa for medical care. The remaining 42 rescued persons will now apparently be disembarked in Augusta some time tomorrow. 16 August was the last time a migrant boat reached Italy from Libya.
UNHCR issued a statement saying it was “grateful that the Italian navy took this initiative despite the fact that the boat was in Maltese search and rescue waters.”»

Artigo e Foto.: PACE - Images of life for ‘boat people’ from North Africa

The tiny Italian island of Lampedusa has been the destination for many refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants fleeing the conflicts in North Africa in recent months. In May 2011 a five-strong PACE delegation visited the island to hear at first hand from some of the “boat people” who have made the perilous journey across the Mediterranean and see for themselves the conditions they faced...

IN late March, as Libya’s civil war raged, loyalist soldiers forced Abu Kurke, a 23-year-old political refugee from Ethiopia, onto an inflatable boat with dozens of other African migrants and dispatched them from Tripoli’s port into the unforgiving waters of the Mediterranean.

The journey almost killed Mr. Kurke. After leaking oil, the boat went adrift between Tripoli and the Italian island of Lampedusa. A helicopter spotted it, and soldiers threw down a few bottles of water and gestured that help would come.

Hours became days. Stranded at sea, the boat encountered bad weather. Waves beat against the vessel, knocking two people overboard. Food and water soon ran out, and exhausted passengers began to die of starvation and thirst. The Italian Coast Guard was alerted and reportedly made contact with a warship in the area. Still, no help came.

Artigo - ACNUR: Mixed Migration into Europe

Mixed migration into Europe
They cross from West Africa to the Spanish Canary Islands; from Morocco to southern Spain; from Libya to Malta and the Italian islands of Sicily and Lampedusa; and from Turkey to the islands of Greece

«Taking their chances on fishing boats, dinghies and canoes, every year thousands of men, women and children drown in a desperate bid to reach Europe from Africa. Many more enter the European Union by land, via Turkey and the Balkans or from Ukraine and Belarus.

People entering Europe irregularly - without passports or visas - do so for a variety of reasons. In some cases they are fleeing persecution, human rights violations and armed conflict and can, therefore, be considered as refugees who need special protection. More often, they are migrants trying to escape poverty and unemployment.

In order to help governments respond to some of the challenges posed by mixed movements of refugees and migrants in a coherent and practical way, the UN refugee agency has started implementing a 10-point plan which sets out key areas in which action is required in countries of origin, transit and destination.»

70 photos, taken with his mobile phone from March 28 to April 17, 2011, show the journey as "harraga" (clandestine) of Ilyess, 30, a native of Zarzis (Tunisia). The crossing to Lampedusa, between emergence and host, until he reaches the camp of Trapani, where he lived for 13 days "like Guantanamo" (as he says): not enough water for showers to be used by 700 people, escape attempts initially denied by the police, the constant uncertainty about his fate.

Ilyess mobile phone photographs the vessel carrying migrants, the host family met in Lampedusa and above all the camp of Trapani, which he defines as his "Guantanamo": the food (given from behind a grid for security issues), phone cards, relax moments playing football or dancing, the hunger strikes and protests and finally the temporary residence permit for humanitarian protection. The latest images show the Sicilian landscape Ilyess sees through the window of the bus when he is finally free to continue his journey and tries to reach Paris. Ilyess arrived in Paris April 20, 2011.

CIE of Lampedusa set on fire by the Tunisians: “No deportations”

«The elderly lock themselves in the house, the kids put a handkerchief to their mouth while the column of smoke blown by the mistral invades. Smell of plastic, scrap metal, burnt rubber. “A toxic cloud – dare someone – who knows how much crap we are breathing.” The sky turns from blue to gray, the airport closes, the police are unleashed to to look for hundreds of escaped Tunisians. And Lampedusa falls again in the worst of nightmares, with two of the three warehouses in the centre of the district Imbriacola incinerated by the fire lit by a group of migrants exasperated by confinement and deportation. The anger, the fear of invasion, the memories of the old fire in February 2009 come back. Mayor Dino De Rubeis abandon all restraint and talks about war: “There is a population that cannot bear any longer, that wants to take to the streets with batons – he says – who should protect us has not done so. What we expected , unheeded by the national government, has happened, with 1,500 immigrants who have proved to be people of ill repute. ” The deputy mayor Angela Maraventano, senator of the Northern League, shoots even bigger, “Tunis should compensate us and welcome them in the country’s prisons.”»

Italy and Libyan NTC Take Further Steps to Reactivate Italian-Libyan Friendship Agreement

Italian Foreign Minster Franco Frattini traveled to Tripoli on 30 September for meetings with the NTC President Mustafa Abdel Jalil and Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril. Frattini and Jibril met one week earlier on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Meeting. Italy and the NTC signed a memorandum of understanding to create a joint coordination committee whose function will be to prepare for the reactivation of Italy-Libya Friendship Agreement as soon as a new Libyan government assumes office.
